Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui)
The Painted Lady butterfly is also known as the Thistle Butterfly due to its food preference while in the caterpillar stage and the Cosmopolitan, due to its wide distribution around the globe.
This Painted Lady butterfly was spotted sampling the nectar of some Lantana flowers. The photos displayed on this page were taken on 5 October 2003 at Piedmont Park in Atlanta, GA.

American Painted Lady (Vanessa virginiensis)
The American Painted Lady butterfly is similar in appearance to the Painted Lady butterfly. The most noticeable differences are the 2 large eyespots on the underside of the wings.
This American Painted Lady butterfly was also spotted on Lantana flowers. Photographed along Piedmont Ave. NE in Midtown Atlanta.
